I brunch pretty hard. There was a brief stint of time where I was brunching every Sunday, having bottomless mimosas for hours, ordering more than one entrée, and inviting everybody back to our apartment afterward to continue “brunching.” It was kind of inevitable that brunch in Dallas was going to happen. I mean, what if they have something really cool there that I don’t even know about?
They do. It’s called a blackberry sage mimosa. After passing out early on Friday night to regain the sleep from waking up at 4:00 AM to catch a flight and the hour difference in time zones, I was raring to go on Saturday morning. I had a small breakfast at the hotel to save room for the potentials of lunch/brunch/mystery awaiting me. I gave my compadres the choices of Mesa Maya, Lark on the Park, or Savor Gastropub for our noon meal. They picked Savor, which I was secretly hoping for after my research told me it was right on the park and had brunch on Saturdays.
Located literally right on Klyde Warren Park, it looks super fancy and all of the outer walls are made out of glass. It has a ton of outdoor seating with couches and outdoor fans and all that. Hell, it has a ton of indoor seating too. Unfortunately, we could not sit outside… “because all those tables are reserved.” Yeah, pretty disappointing as there were a lot, lot of tables that looked open. Whatever. I walked there so I was already a tad sweaty anyway. And I was happy we could get a table at all without a res. Inside would do fine.
Our server was lovely, we ordered our booze, and we were greeted by a bowl of biscuits and strawberry jam. Should I say this? I don’t know. Hmm? Yes. Okay. There was a small, dark hair on the underside of our butter ball. We did not raise any hell, however, and it was quickly exchanged for a new ball of butter. Although I’m pretty sure my photo below is of the hairy one.
The menu looked pretty awesome, as did all of the food we saw floating about. While our waiter said his favorite was the chicken fried steak (of course it is, you live in Texas), that didn’t sound too brunchy to any of us. I saw the words “fried chicken,” “waffles,” and “Nutella” all in the same place and had to get the Chicken and Waffles. Elise got the Lemon Ricotta Stuffed French Toast and Kevin got the Lobster Puffs and the Deviled Eggs. We ordered after a very serious agreement that we would all share.
The Chicken and Waffles was good, not great. When I hear there’s Nutella on something, it better not be a drizzle. I really wanted a big smear of the stuff. The chicken was pretty moist and tasty, but the waffles I believe had been pre-made and maybe sat around because they were kind of dry. The whipped butter underneath helped some with that. They are a beaut though aren’t they?
Elise won. She won brunch. Well, in my opinion anyway. This French toast was light and fluffy and the ricotta made it moist and not too sweet. Like it was fantastic. I wish I had it now. It gets two pictures for its greatness. It may be one of the best brunch dishes I’ve ever had.
On to the Lobster Puffs. Okay, these things look good. They look fancy. And they get a lot of rave reviews on Yelp. Our server said it was a very popular item. They were eh. Warm gooey lobster-ish center, thin fried shell, and bright mustardy remoulade. The thing is, I guess I just don’t like my lobster gooey. Kevin said maybe he just didn’t like his lobster fried. We actually left one puff behind because no one wanted it. Hey, at least they photograph well.
The deviled eggs were different. Very different. Delish different. They were Kevin’s favorite dish. They sat on top of a roasted bell pepper relish and were sprinkled with pecan brittle. I don’t even know how you think up that combination, but nobody was complaining. Definitely the most sophisticated and tasty deviled eggs I’ve tried.
All in all, Savor threw a pretty satisfying brunch. It was real good, but not great (kind of like the Chicken and Waffles). The space itself is fantastic, roomy, and all white, wood, and glass. I’d come back to try their lunch or dinner. Or just to sit outside and have drinks and snacks beside the park (but where wouldn’t I do that really?). It’s clearly run very efficiently and the presentation is great. Some of the dishes just could’ve been better. But I’d say it was a decent brunch destination… just next time, let me sit outside okay?
It’s located right on Klyde Warren Park at 2000 Woodall Rogers Freeway, Dallas, TX.
I love this post! I’m a huge brunch freak too, it used to be my everyweekend activity when I lived in New York. Even better when bottomless mimosas are involved. I’m already planning my brunch spots for my next few trips. Mmmmm brunch. It’s a shame your nutella wasn’t adequate, that could’ve been a winning combination.
